For years, the Green Bay Packers were not on the front line spending on free agents. They usually were in on guys but never landed big names. Today, Gutekunst showed he’s all in with the group of Packers.

Green Bay Packers Cut David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones

Two of the most beloved Packers were released on the first day of free agency. By releasing David Bakhtiari, the Packers will save 20.95 million in cap space. Aaron Jones was owed 17.5 million, and the Packers and Drew Rosenhaus could not agree on a restructuring.

Brian Gutekunst had this to say about the release of Aaron Jones. “We want to thank Aaron for his unwavering commitment to the Packers and the community over the past seven seasons.” He also said,” It is certainly one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make in my time with the Packers and not one taken lightly. He has not only had a significant impact on the field and in the locker room, but he is one of the most beloved players in the community. We wish nothing but the best for Aaron and his entire family moving forward.”

Green Bay Packers Sign Josh Jacobs and Xavier Mckinney

The Packers made two large splashes in free agency. The first is with Josh Jacobs. The former running back in Las Vegas agreed to a four-year, 48 million-dollar contract with the Packers. He is 26 years old, the same age Aaron Jones signed his four-year contract for 48 million three years ago.

Josh Jacobs had a down year last year, with 805 yards and six touchdowns. In 2022, he was the best running back in the league, with 1653 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Packers get a veteran back who is still in his prime.

The Packers have been rumored to be interested in Xavier McKinney for a while. Per PFF, McKinney had the highest coverage grade in the NFL last year, with a 91.2. He is only 24 years old, the same age as Packer’s other safety, Anthony Johnson Jr., who was a rookie last year.

Xavier McKinney’s contract is a four-year, 68 million-dollar deal—17 M per year. It is a rather large contract, putting him in the top five paid at the position, but it is well-earned.
