The Green Bay Packers (6-6) hit the road for their third primetime game, Monday night vs. the New York Giants (4-8). The Giants are having a letdown year after making the playoffs last year, but they have now won two in a row. The Packers are winners of three in a row and four of their previous five. Regardless of the records, this should be a good game.
The Packers currently have the seventh spot in the playoffs. They are safe by no means and can’t overlook any team or game.
Here’s a look at a few of the biggest pregame storylines for the Packers week 14 matchup vs. the Giants.
Can The Green Bay Packers Slow Down Tommy DeVito?
Coming into the season, I did not have the “how to stop Tommy DeVito” on my bingo card, but here we are. DeVito has played well over the past month and won the locker room. Over his last two games, he’s thrown for 437 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions while completing 68.6% of his passes.
The New York Giants may not have played well this year, but they have a solid group of pass-catchers. DeVito does well getting all the guys involved; in the last game, nine different guys caught passes.
The Packers must rush four against the Giants and should plan to dial in some blitzes. DeVito completes 45.5% of his passes under pressure compared to 67.5% when kept clean.
If the Packers want to take the next step in proving they are a playoff-caliber team, it starts against the Giants and this passing offense.
Green Bay Packers Look To Move to 17-0 in December Under Matt LaFleur
Since LaFleur took over for the Green Bay Packers, he has had a perfect record in December. Whether it’s the frozen tundra or understanding his team, it’s notable. This Packers team, especially the offense, feels like it has hit its stride as of late.
One thing LaFleur loves to do in December is get AJ Dillon the ball. He has mentioned how he gets better throughout the season. Last game, Dillon had 18 carries. The Giants are one of the worst teams in the league, allowing 136 yards on the ground. I expect Dillon to be heavily involved and the Packers to take advantage through the air with play-action.
Matt LaFleur and the Packers should be able to get it done on the road in primetime and stay perfect in December.
Can Jordan Love and the Packers Offense Stay Hot?
Statistically speaking, the New York Giants are not good against the pass. They are allowing 228 yards per game and 6.7 yards per attempt. Over the past month, the Green Bay Packers have been red hot. In the last three games, they are in the top five in passing yards, averaging 272 yards per game.
The Giants are last in the league in pressuring the quarterback; according to PFF, they only get pressure on 22% of dropbacks. Conversely, the Packers only allow pressure on 24% of dropbacks, ranking them in the top ten. The Packers have a clear advantage in the trenches.
It is trending towards Christian Watson not being able to play on Monday. He and Jordan Love have been really good over the last few weeks, and it will definitely impact the offense. I would expect Dontayvion Wicks and Jayden Reed to step up in his absence in a plus matchup.
