Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy talks about first round pick Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers coaching staff and front office, led by CEO Mark Murphy and Brian Gutekunst, are moving forward with 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love as QB1.

Although he has immense upside, it’s important to note that nobody knows anything definitive about what Love is or will be on the football field. The Utah State product has appeared in 10 games in three seasons, completing 50 of his 83 pass attempts for 606 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, with a QBR of 79.7.

So, what would a successful season for Love look like? And what are reasonable expectations for the fourth-year player? The Packers CEO/President weighed in.

Green Bay Packers CEO/President shared his thoughts on Jordan Love

“With regard to Jordan [Love], I would tell our fans to remember that this will be his first year as a starter and that there will be a learning curve,” said Mark Murphy during media availability. “That said, though, Jordan has benefited greatly by playing behind Aaron Rodgers for the last three years. Having watched him in practice the past three years, I have seen significant growth in Jordan and think he is ready to play. Also, he has benefited greatly by taking most of the snaps with the first-team offense in the last two offseasons, as well as in preseason games the last two years. Although it was very limited, his play in the Eagles game last year was very encouraging. I’ve also been very impressed with how Jordan has handled himself over the past three years. He never complained and continued to work hard to improve his game. Most recently, I have seen Jordan step forward as a leader. There will be ups and downs this year, but it will be exciting, and we’re confident in Jordan.”

These comments are both an endorsement of the new franchise quarterback and a level-headed reminder that there will be ups and downs in 2023. And why wouldn’t there be? Love has made just one start in the NFL that didn’t go particularly well and a strong performance against the NFC champion Eagles to hang his hat on.

There will be a steep learning curve for the 6-foot-4 signal caller; however, on-the-job training is the only way Love can improve at this point after spending three seasons learning behind Aaron Rodgers.

It’s both an exciting and uncertain time for the Green Bay Packers at quarterback, who enter the land of the unknown after 30 consecutive years of hall-of-fame play.
