Heading into the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers had a primary glaring need. The Packers had just lost Robert Tonyan, who signed with the Bears, and it sounds like they have moved on from the veteran Mercedes Lewis.
The Packers have not invested in the tight-end position for years; most recently was Jace Sternberger, who was drafted in the third round but only lasted two years before being waived. The anemic group had to be addressed, and we will see if it pays dividends.
Luke Musgrave
The Former Oregon State tight-end was drafted 42nd overall by the Packers. Musgrave’s senior year was cut short by a knee injury. His overall production levels in college were less than desirable. In four years, he had only 633 yards and two touchdowns, which begs the question, how did he go so early in the draft?
During the senior bowl was clocked at over 20 mph. At the combine, he tested off the charts. At 6’05” and 253 lbs, he ran a 4.62 forty and a 36-inch vertical. He has the upside to be a playmaker in the middle of the field, something they have been lacking for years. He is a smooth route runner that will be a mismatch for linebackers.
Green Bay Packers 3rd Round Draft Pick, Tucker Kraft
The Packers selected Tucker Kraft with pick 78 from South Dakota State. He broke out in 2021 as a sophomore with 773 yards and six touchdowns. In 2022 he played in nine games due to an ankle injury but had 348 yards and three touchdowns. When targeted, he had an elite QB rating of 134.7.
Kraft is more of a physical tight end and an aggressive blocker than Musgrave. He does not lack athleticism, though, running a 4.69 forty at 6’04, 254lbs. Kraft will be an excellent piece to help in the run-and-pass game. He has tough hands and can absorb contact when catching in traffic.
Final Thoughts On Green Bay Packers TEs Luke Musgrave & Tucker Kraft
Brian Gutenkust made a point to get some help in the middle of the field. Both Musgrave and Kraft should complement each other well with their play styles. With the additions, it’s an instant upgrade to a group that hasn’t been a strength for Green Bay.
It will be interesting if the Packers go with more two tight-end sets this year to help establish the run. Musgrave and Kraft both have a massive opportunity in front of them. If both of them can grow and improve, the offense should be able to take a big step.
