Before the 2022 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers began what many fans considered the beginning of a new direction.  Starting this was the Davante Adams trade.  This move gave the Packers two first-round selections in that same draft.  A dream scenario for any team.

However, like most years, Packers fans disagreed on how to use this capital.

We’ve grown accustomed to singular, later picks that have an excellent chance to be moved to trade back.  But every year, we have those that want pass-catchers and weapons for now former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and those that would prefer to bolster the defense.

In 2022, the Packers decided to use both on the latter, selecting linebacker Quay Walker and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt.  Both players are under pressure having first-round draft status, but to me, one is in a better spot than the other currently.

Fair or not, Devonte Wyatt is under more pressure going into the 2023 season.

Green Bay Packers DT Devonte Wyatt Has All the Potential, Opportunity

Devonte Wyatt has plenty going for him, pressure or not.  Being a first-round pick is nothing to down-play.  That is earned and shows how great his ability is.

It also shows just how much Green Bay values him.  To be selected that high means the team has faith in what he will be, and that they believe he will be a key member on the team for years to come.  And while I expect Kenny Clark to anchor this defensive line for the foreseeable future, as of now, he is only under contract for two more years.  Which aligns with the end of Wyatt’s rookie deal, and when the team would have to make decisions on a fifth-year options.

On the flip side, the former Georgia Bulldog had some trouble in his first year.  Mainly around consistency.  In fact, he had PFF defensive grades of 54.2, 43.8, 85.9, 49.7, 61.7, 74.9, 69.6, 60.2, 54.0, 67.8, 36.8, 87.7, 77.7, 49.9, 58.3 and 90.6, in order, over the 16 games he played in.  Sure looks like a roller coaster ride to me.

Additionally, fair or not, the draft capital also shortens the fuse on how much patience some have with the inconsistency.

Then, to top it all off, the position he plays is going to play a big part of the Green Bay Packers being competitive, and possibly, making a playoff push.  The run defense needs to get better, and having a stud alongside Clark will ensure this will happen.

In comes Wyatt.

Look, I’m not suggesting the team or the fans are fed up with Wyatt.  I am, however, pointing out this is a first-round pick at a position the Packers desperately need another stud at. Pro Football Focus shows only three current interior defensive linemen on the roster with snaps at the position for the team in 2022.

The opportunity is most certainly there.  And while “pressure” may be a bit harsh, I’d challenge you to describe the result of his (to-date) positives and negatives in a blender.

Could it be, pressure?
