The Green Bay Packers enter 2023 with a very inexperienced group of wide receivers. In fact, no wideout on the current roster has played more than one season in the league. But the three players with the most experience, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure, are all making a big impression during the first two weeks of OTAs.
Doubs has openly discussed how the game has slowed down for him in his second season. “Going into year two, I’m playing a lot faster,” Doubs explained. “So, I don’t want to say comfortable because I know being comfortable comes with a sort of complacent area, you know. But, just humbly speaking, I’m playing a lot faster.”
He has also been developed some noticeable chemistry with new starting quarterback Jordan Love in practice with Love finding him four times during a two-minute drill in front of reporters in Week 2 of OTAs.
Watson, meanwhile, has been talking about becoming a leader in the wide receiver room although the second round pick out of North Dakota State is only in his second year in the league.
“Someone’s got to lead, someone’s got to take the reins, and it’s definitely something that comes natural to me just in terms of being able to teach and lead by example and talk to these guys about what the standard is and what we’ve got to do,” Watson told reporters.
Watson is the player that has the most upside potential of any of the team’s receivers according to most scouts and he is the favorite to assume the WR1 role that was opened after the departure of Davante Adams and Allen Lazard in consecutive offseasons.
The Green Bay Packers Have Another Young Wideout Turning Heads
While Toure was often overlooked as a rookie, he has been turning heads at OTAs.
“If you guys would see Samori right now, you wouldn’t even recognize the guy from last year,” receivers coach Jason Vrable said. “He’s probably of everybody the one that everybody around the building is like, ‘83 looks unbelievable right now.’ He’s put on like 8-10 pounds, he’s worked his butt off, and he’s just grown into his own. You feel comfortable in your own skin, and you play fast, and you play with confidence.”
The Packers are counting on these three young receivers to lead and to take a step forward in year two of their NFL careers. There’s still more than three months before the season starts, but the early signs are promising.
