Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers staff are at it again on day three of the NFL draft. The Packers selected Marshawn Lloyd with the 88th pick and later selected Ty’Ron Hopper with the 91st pick. Green Bay addressed both positions via the off-season and this year’s draft. It never hurts to secure more depth and two positions that one could argue take the most punishment in football.

Marshawn Lloyd Is a Good Fit for the Green Bay Packers

If you’re looking for an explosive back, look no further. Lloyd was tied for 7th in the nation in yards per carry among players with at least 55 carries last season. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry on 115 attempts. Lloyd was a transfer from South Carolina in 2022 for an opportunity to play with the number one overall pick, Caleb Williams.

Playing with Caleb Williams comes with a specific mission statement. You are Robin to Caleb’s Batman. Surprisingly, he wasn’t asked to do much in the passing game. Lloyd had only 13 receptions for 232 yards in 2023.

There is no question that Green Bay liked Lloyd’s athleticism at the position. At the combine, he recorded the sixth-fastest 40 times and the third-best bench for running backs.

Brian Gutekunst Uses the Rasual Douglas Pick to Select Ty’Ron Hopper

Anyone who has seen the movie “A Bug Life” knows that the name Hopper can sometimes be a bit scary. The second I turned on Ty’Ron Hopper’s film, I knew he would have a similar effect to the movie Hopper on the Ants: fear. He was all over the field on film.

With the Packers selecting Edgerrin Cooper in the second round and with the depth they currently have at linebacker, Hopper seems destined to be a special teams player, at least in the short term. This pick tells me that Green Bay is committed to improving the offense and defense and fixing some of the shortcomings of Special Teams. It takes all three phases to play good football to be competitive in this league. This is just another piece to help Rich Bisaccia achieve that goal.
