The expectations for this Green Bay Packers team were all over the board coming into this season. It’s a skill group with most rookies, second-year guys, and a first-year starting quarterback. Matt Lafleur has shown some different formations than years past. Through two games, they are averaging 31.5 points a game. Last year, the team, led by Aaron Rodgers, averaged 21.8 points per game. Though it’s two games, the offense has not been fully healthy yet.
Here is what we have learned after two weeks.
Green Bay Packers Young Receiving Core
The Green Bay Packers rookies can play. The trio of rookies shown flashes are Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave, and Dontayvious Wicks. With Christian Watson out, it bumped everyone up on the depth chart. Reed and Wicks have stepped up to the occasion and played confidently. Musgrave has shown to be a matchup problem with his speed.
As these young guys gain experience, the offense will improve. Matt Lafluer has done an excellent job scheming them open and getting them in good situations. It is exciting to see where this offense can go.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love
Jordan Love has been impressive so far in the first two weeks.
Something that stands out with Love is his anticipation. Love has put in the work with the receivers in the offseason and has built a connection. Many of Loves’ throws are before the breaks, anticipating when and where the guy will be.
Love has done one of the most essential things a quarterback can do: take care of the ball. Love has had two turnover-worthy plays, but neither resulted in a turnover. With a banged-up offensive group and a core of young, skill guys, it has been impressive.
Uncertainty In the Offensive Line
The offensive line was supposed to be the strength coming into the season. Going into week three, Jenkins is out with an mcl injury, and Bakhtiari missed week 2 with inflammation in his knee—two guys who are the staple of the offensive line.
The pass blocking has been the strength of this front group, whereas the run blocking has been on the poor side. It will be interesting to see what Lafleur does with the offensive line moving forward.
Final Thoughts
Matt Lafleur deserves some credit for what he has done for this offense. The playcalling has been impressive with getting guys open. Love has played above expectations, and the rookies have played well. The Packers offense has all the pieces to become an excellent group. Hopefully, they can get healthy, and we can see what they are truly capable of.
If the Packers can get healthy, they can be a real force.
