Green Bay Packers linebacker Rashan Gary (52) reacts after a sack against the New Orleans Saints during their football game Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis.

While the Green Bay Packers can’t seem to find a win on the field, GM Brian Gutekunst created his own win off the field by extending Rashan Gary to a four-year 107.5 million dollar extension. Rashan Gary has shown that he deserves to be a cornerstone of the Packers defense for years to come.

Green Bay Packers Sign Rashan Gary

When asked about Green Bay extending him and becoming the highest-paid defensive player in Green Bay Packer history, Gary responded, “I’m Just trying to get to work.” Gary is one of those players you can’t help but appreciate.

During the game, he was called for roughing the passer. There was a camera on him showing the kind of player and person he was. He was berating himself repeatedly for the mistake he made. Once we all found out that he signed the contract before the game even started, it made that moment even better. It shows just how much he cares about winning and becoming the best player he can.

Are the Green Bay Packers Sellers at the Deadline?

One door this move potentially opens is the possibility of the Packers being sellers by the trade deadline. With the Team sitting at 2-5 and the offense looking unfixable. The Packers may need to shed some of their older talent. While most Packers fans don’t want to hear it, it may be the best move going forward. Players like Kenny Clark, De’vondre Campbell, and Rasul Douglas are all players with value in the open market. They are all approaching 30 years old and are impact players.

While it’s not fun to consider the idea that the Packer may not be very good for a few years, it is very possible. So, if you’re going to be bad until your younger talent matures, it might make sense to shed some of your older players before you lose them for nothing. In my opinion, if you were planning to make a move like this, it would be best to pair it with a positive. Which would be signing one of your best young players to a long-term deal.

Even with all that being said, there is a good chance that Gutekunst isn’t very active in the trade market. So I doubt any of this will happen.

Final Thoughts

The Gary contract serves one additional purpose outside of securing Gary’s future. It lays out a road map for our young offensive talent. That road map is hard work. If you work hard and strive to be great, like Gary has shown so far in his short career, you will be rewarded. Leadership comes in a lot of forms. Gary has mentioned to reporters that he prefers to lead by example. The Packers need more players like him on their roster. Us fans and the Packers are lucky to have him for the next four years.
