With the conclusion of the offseason program for the Green Bay Packers, we now look forward to training camp and, ultimately, the season.
A lot can happen between now and then, including injuries, breakout performances, and free-agent visits, so roster spots are far from determined. But there is a significant time period without football between now and training camp, and speculation is a great way to keep the main thing the main thing.
What better way to help bridge that gap than to speculate who will ultimately make the 53-man roster?
So, here is how I envision the team shaking out after how things went during OTA’s and mandatory mini-camp.
Packers Offensive Predictions
Quarterback: Jordan Love, Sean Clifford
Love is now the man in Green Bay. This selection couldn’t have been any easier.
I don’t see Clifford missing out on the 53-man either. He’s a rookie, meaning cheap, and the Packers wouldn’t have burned a draft pick on someone they didn’t believe it.
Additionally, I would also like to see a veteran brought in to bring this positional group to three roster spots. However, as it currently sits, I don’t see more than the two listed.
Running Back: Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Tyler Goodson
I love how this room looks if this pans out. The proven veterans on this list are surely locked in.
Goodson brings a lot of excitement to the table, and could be a great compliment to Dillon and Jones. The former Iowa running back has a great tool set, brings plenty of college production with him, can catch the ball and has decent body profile despite his 5-foot-9 frame.
Wide Receiver: Romeo Doubs, Samori Toure, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, Jayden Reed
Now this would be something. All rookies and second-year players would be exciting and scary at the same time. And regardless of which way you lean on your opinion with a room like this, one thing is for certain, this group oozes potential.
Plus, it matches exactly what the Green Bay Packers have been saying and acting like for some time now. I’m on board completely.
Tight End: Luke Musgrave, Tucker Kraft, Josiah Deguara
For the most part, this room was another very easy one to put together. Musgrave, Kraft and Deguara are sure things to crack this roster.
However, this is another group I would love to see a veteran added to. If only I could think of someone like that…
Offensive Line: Josh Meyers, Jon Runyan, Elgton Jenkins, Royce Newman, Zach Tom, David Bakhtiari, Caleb Jones, Yosh Nijman, Rasheed Walker, Sean Rhyan
The Green Bay Packers should once again be one of the best offensive line units in the NFL. I believe this group above will help get them there, and stay there. There is a lot of good depth and versatility within this group. And in today’s game, that can’t be undervalued.
Green Bay Packers Defensive Predictions
Defensive Line: Karl Brooks, Kenny Clark, Jonathan Ford, T.J Slaton, Devonte Wyatt, Brenton Cox Jr., Kingsley Enagbare, Rashan Gary (PUP), Justin Hollins, Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness
A good mixture of inside and outside guys with more of that familiar flexibility, this group has a great shot to show good improvement. And if the Packers are going to push for the playoffs, they need to do exactly that.
With that being said, how could a fan of this team not be super excited about draft Van Ness in the first? Hercules has the ability to play inside and out, and can moved across the line to help get him in the best possible position to succeed.
Another note here is Gary will open the season on the PUP list, and won’t count towards the 53-man roster.
Linebacker: De’Vondre Campbell, Tariq Carpenter, Jonathan Garvin, Isaiah McDuffie, Quay Walker, Eric Wilson
A similar theme to most of the defense, this group has a great opportunity to bounce back. And in order for the Packers to succeed, this group has to be better. Starting with Quay Walker, who will look to continue to improve.
A big time plus here is the combination of depth linebackers and special team players. That flexibility is always a valuable asset for a player to have and can help earn jobs.
Secondary: Jaire Alexander, Corey Ballentine, Rasul Douglas, Shermar Jean-Charles, Keisean Nixon, Eric Stokes (PUP), Carrington Vallentine, Rudy Ford, Anthony Johnson Jr., Tarvarius Moore, Jonathan Owens, Darnell Savage
A good mix of cornerbacks and safeties, but with a lot of uncertainty included. The positional battle for the second safety behind Savage will be a good one to watch. However, this is how I see it shaking out.
I will definitely have an eye on Anthony Johnson Jr. as the season approaches. I was a big fan of his tape leading up to the draft and thought he was one of the best values in the draft considering where the Packers got him.
Additionally, similar to Gary, I predict Stokes will start the season on the PUP list and won’t count towards the 53.
Green Bay Packers Special Teams Predictions
In addition to the players listed above, I envision Pat O’Donnell, Broughton Hatcher, and Anders Carlson to crack the 53-man roster. These will round out the punter, long snapper and kicker positions.
Again, a lot can happen between now and the start of the season, and I fully expect a few surprises, but this is how I would bet it shakes out given the current roster construction.
